7:30 am - Registration Opens
8:00 am - Thought Leadership C-Level Breakfast Briefing (By Invitation Only)
Public and private sector leadership will participate in a World Bank briefing on the Africa Moonshot and will join open-forum discussion regarding how stakeholders can become involved in the initiative.
8:50 am - Welcome
Geeks Without Frontiers will open the 4th Annual Thought Leadership Forum and introduce the World Bank, who will set the stage with an overview of the Africa Moonshot initiative.
9:00 - 10:30 am - “Moonshot Africa” Roundtable: Transformative Technology and Potential for an Integrated Infrastructure Leapfrog
Are today’s technologies “transformative” or “disruptive”... or both? This hotly debated question serves as a focal point for discussion by international thought leaders against the backdrop of Moonshot Africa, the World Bank’s ambitious initiative to connect individuals, firms, and governments in Africa to fast internet. How will new technologies -- digitization in particular -- create an opportunity for low-income developing countries to leapfrog into the 21st century? This session will provide answers.
10:30 -11.30 am - Policy Forum: Leveraging Model Legal, Regulatory and Fiscal Solutions to Promote Accelerated Delivery of Broadband in Africa
As preparations get underway for the Africa Moonshot, best-practice policy and regulatory approaches are available that would enable accelerated delivery of high-speed broadband connectivity by fiber, mobile and satellite networks. How, when and where these modular frameworks can be applied -- and with what tangible impact -- will be addressed during this high-level, open-forum discussion of thought leaders.
11.30 -11.45 am - Coffee & Networking Break
11:45 - 12:45 pm - ’Resilient’, ‘Smart’ and ‘Sustainable’ Networks - Designing and Implementing High-Impact Connectivity Solutions for Africa
Africa’s connectivity environment presents significant challenges, not least natural and man-made disasters, forcibly displaced populations and poverty. How can the Africa Moonshot’s short-term internet infrastructure plans provide long-term sustainability, including not only resilience but also inclusiveness as part of smart communities?
12:45 pm Luncheon
1:00 - 2:00 pm Working Luncheon Roundtable - Mapping and Measuring Digital Delivery for Low Income Communities
The timing for Africa Moonshot is excellent. Leading satellite, mobile and fiber organisations are increasingly delivering high-speed connectivity for low-income unserved and underserved communities. Such partnerships draw not only upon international system and service providers, but also local connectivity providers who – through effective business plans – can be incentivized to ensure long-term project sustainability. As industry and government prepare to implement the Africa Moonshot, what proven approaches are available and how will they be delivered, mapped and measured?
2:00 - 2:30 pm - Keynote - “A Call to Action for the Connectivity Industry”
2:30 - 3:30 pm - Introducing an Effective Program of ‘Training and Capacity Building’ to Support the Moonshot Africa Initiative
Every major initiative in Africa requires getting down to brass tacks, and the Africa Moonshot will be no exception. Project origination and sustainability will be dependent upon, for example, the development of local and regional training and capacity building. This will also involve positive engagement with local communities, employment and socio-economic development… including for women and girls. This session will explore how sustainable connectivity will be achieved through the Africa Moonshot by empowering local stakeholders with digital skills and information.
3:30 - 3:45 pm Coffee Break
3:45-5.00 pm - The Game Plan - "Rewriting the Rules"
Geeks’ Thought Leadership Forum will conclude with a roundup of key conclusions drawn from the day’s proceedings and will go several steps further: Objectives will be defined. Actions will be identified. And timelines will be set. Attend the final session to explore your role as a provider of revolutionary connectivity solutions for the Africa Moonshot.
